"Domingo Sucks His Thumb in My Christopher Street Apartment,N.Y."©Eugene Pinkowski from "New York SeriesI 1992-1995 ©Eugene Pinkowski     Between assingments,I would ask interesting looking strangers if I could photograph them.They could pose any way they desired.  lways use my 89 Christopher Street apartment as the set. it had pale tangerine walls,grey carpet,charcoal and grey sofa bed ,as decorated by the owner. Domingo was 6'4",had blue-black hair,wore the finest designer clothes. It was the December of the blizzard.First,I did a fashion shoot against the six foot snow banks.I had platinum blonde hair at that time,and I wanted to see how Domingo would look as A Snow Angel,so I sprayed his hair white,painted his nails white.Almos t every person I photographed asked to pose nude,including Domingo.they all wanted to reveal themselve for my camera.Domingo started sucking his thumb,so we put his briefs back on him,as they looked like a type of diaper,and balanced the shot.  This was one of my first shoots as a staff photographer for INTERVIEW Magazine.
Andy Warhol called me personally on a Saturday to ask me "if I wanted to do a shoot"
That next Tuesday was Dennis Hopper, who had just wrapped "Blue Velvet". at first,he just hated me. I couldn't light him,I couldn't capture him,and he was unrelenting. Then, he was perspiring, so I took a blotter over and touched his face. He said:"I never wore any f------ make-up in a film, I'm not wearing any f------ make-up for you!"
I burst out laughing as he was so over the top.
He laughed,and the ice was broken. Joan Quinn,West Coast editor for INTERVIEW arrived. the shoot wrapped,and Dennis asked me "Do you want to see some of my work?" Out came this stack of prints, Joan sitting next to Dennis, and this image is the result.
Dennis and I worked together often.If he was walking down any street in any city, he would run up and give me a hug if he saw me. I miss Dennis very much.E.P.

I asked friends,strangers,neighbors that I found interesting to do anything they wanted for my camera. Everything was shot at 89 Christopher Street, my apartment then, with this striped couch, brick walls.
Everything was shot on TMAX 1600 black + white film, pushed two stops.
Chafik is holding his cigarette,but his right hand is curled.Look at his fingers.Virginia asked if she could "bring a friend", and Chafik was her very young Egyptian lover. their body language and faces are amazingly expressive.

Jim Carrey was just hitting his stride in his career. INTERVIEW Magazine wanted to feature Carrey as "We Predict" in front of magazine.                                                                                                                              
Four hours into the shoot,after Carrey had used every prop and expression, as he was young and trying to get a classic image to advance his career. My stylist walked over to Carrey with the iron,as the Armani suit he's wearing was wrinkling. Jim Carrey grabbed the hot iron, and said:"Look. I'm an ironing board. Get rid of those wrinkles..."  And, here it is. A perfect shot.E.P.

 Tanya was fiftenn at the time I shot this image. An absolutely beautiful young woman,physically and spiritually. A ballet dancer in her youth, her grace and ease with her body made her even more lovely.Notice her hands and feet..positioned so gracefully,echoing the diaphenous white of this couture gown.
I shot natural light with reflectors as fill, fil capture on 35mm TMax 400 and Ekatachrome 64 pushed. I very,very rarely reduce color to black and white as I see color images in color,and black and white as tonal in my head before snapping one frame of film. E.P.

 This is one of my first professional shoots back in 1979. I used 35mm Kodak PlusX Pan Film,handline developed,and printed, by me.Being self-taught, I rarely read instructions, and simply worked by the seat of my pants,trial and error.Last year,we needed to digitize my film archive. When scanning the negs from this shoot, I noticed moisture had caused condesation.as well, I must not have fully rinsed these negatives,as the fix was reactivated from that moisture, and caused the dnsest areas of the negs, namely the blacks, to become thicker, with lowlights looking solarized in the scans. I used Photoshop CS6, and, by cloning and meticulously repairing this image, restored missing areas of emulsion, and removed all of the thickened emulsion outlining the blacks in this image.The male model,Todd, in the bed next to Karen Murphy, was missing his right hand and most of his right shirt,into his neck and face.Karen's lace blouse was missing all detail in the sleeves.Now, it looks as it did when I shot it in Beverly Hills in 1979. Miguel Ferrer photographed for Madame Magazine, Germany, in 1996. Shot in Los Angeles, California, using Kodachrome 64 film, pushed .5 stops, and lit with a combination of Tungsten and natural light.
there is just enough detail in the all black clothing I chose for Ferrer, against the shine of the black leather sofa, to give him real depth and dimension. I intentionally chose a very minimal color palette so his face and the smoke ring would be the immediate focus of this image. the silver cuff links and watch again add dimension, while keeping color to a minimum, so this is really almost a black and white image. The smoke ring is not digitally superimposed, but exactly as it appeared that day. E.P.
